Cement consumption pattern may undergo change

Nitin Madkaikar | Mumbai | May. 04, 2012, 01:11 PM IST

Cement demand

According to a study by tariff commission housing sector accounts for 64% of cement demand while infrastructure consumes 17%, the second highest cement consuming sector. The others, commercial, institutional and industrial sectors together consume about 19%. Going by the projects under implementation over Rs 25 lakh crore worth of projects are in the pipeline in the infrastructure sector while house construction projects worth Rs 7.26 lakh crore are under various stages of implementation. Commercial projects of the order of Rs 6.6 crore are being constructed across India. This may change the cement consumption pattern in favours of infrastructure. This also implies that the incremental demand for cement will emerge from infrastructure segments.
